Day 1 is over, and now it was the time for the workshop. When I was trying to figure out what to showcase for the workshop. After my talk was over and I lived through that again, I wanted to bring something different to the workshop. I wanted the participants to share just more than an experience. Last Oct I took a Service Design course with IDEO. At first, it was hard to understand the overall process what it meant for the whole experience, but what did teach me is that every single moment counts. The entire experiences the first scene, the middle scene and after the stage. This more likely the end to end full on experience on something the customer will use for example signing up for a gym to checking into a hotel. So I realize that hidden moments and unhidden moments made an impacted on me.
The day of the workshop I had different colors on the table so once the participants came to the table, they had to move with their colors. Once I told them, their faces were “Like what, do we have to do” At first they felt uncomfortable, and I made a comment about how this workshop is about them and not about me. I want to them to connect with four-five new people. This is how we make connections and build relationships.
Once everyone moved to their tables, each team made up a team name, and they did an introduction and a fun fact about themselves. I gave a few examples about forms such as trying to change your address of a light path and friction path. A few participants came up with their own frictions they might have. I ask the group if they had any more experiences that were frustrating. We continue to explore and that is when I we started to talk about the before, middle and after.
As the workshop continued, it was time for them to make a list of friction experience I gave them 5 mins. Once they had their list they had to pick one moment. It could be a hidden moment or an unhidden moment. I gave them ten minutes to decide which moment they wanted to recreate in a prototype. This was not your original prototype on paper. I demonstrated what human prototyping could be. They had legos, play-doh, pens, pencils, paper etc…
The workshop was 3.5 hours and they had the rest of the workshop to showcase their prototype. Some of the groups were shy and was not sure how to approach this. This would break down the walls and for them to be more interactive with each other. The more they talk and started to develop their prototype. Each team was getting more interactive as the workshop was going.
As the groups continue to work they started to lay out their prototype and practicing for their presentation. As the workshop was coming to a close. The teams will be ready to do their presentations. As they would do their presentations I call everyone over to their tables so they can do their presentations. Each group went and it was super fun to see what they came up with.
Most workshops that anyone will experience is something that you have to get out of your shell and make that connection with a person next to you. Building a great connection is just as important building a great product. The next time you down to someone you don’t know, you can always say hello and ask a question. You can make the first move.
