Last month, I wrote an article about “Learning is My Rabbit Hole,” because it was meaningful to me and I learned a lot. You could say you I can’t stop learning. When I stop learning my life gets monotonous, it’s only my view. So yeah, I would continue to learn more and more.
When I say “link,” I’m not talking about Grey’s Anatomy, doctor. I believe he became a father… (parents), that is an article on that one. Let’s continue before I get distracted again. Yes, back to links, which I think is so important to have the correct label or visual cue, so I know it is a link. Here’s a solid reason. You don’t want to confuse users. When I was down my “Rabbit Hole,” I think I can click on something and then nothing happens, and that can be frustrating, to say the least.
When someone uses assistance technology, including a screen reader, users can often scan the pages by listening and clicking the tab key again and again. But get this… The screen reader reads only the text links, not the other copy around it. If you have a link that says “click here” and at the moment…. close your eyes, and say “click here” out loud to yourself.
Uh huh… now you understand. I just did it, and when my eyes were closed and I said, “click here,” I guess where is “here”, and that does not give much important information. Where do I click and no idea what to do? So if you switch from “click here” to something else that might be more descriptive, like “Read Grey’s Story” (keep it in the theme). When we create link labels for the user in more detail, it helps them to get the clear direction in which it will happen after clicking on the link.
Let’s make it easier when we create links and usability when anyone uses the application. Always try to put yourself in your shoes. Just as one quote goes, “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” by Joe South. Again, it is never too late to learn something new, we can always benefit from our learning and strive to build applications accessible to all.
Believe accessibility is everything!
