I am always torn between the idea of presenting my best work and trusting myself to know what that is. These past months, I made different choices on how to include in my portfolio based on these two criteria: one was more quantity; the other felt right for me. Coming up with compromise has been a process of trial and error, as it’s often difficult to know which way is better than another, when all are equally valid ways in themselves.
When I started working on my portfolio, it was like staring at a blank canvas. Not sure where to start. After doing some research and taking the time to reflect for a while, here are steps that helped me get out of my head:
1. Researching what similar portfolios look like
2. Taking inspiration from other artists or designers you admire
3. Using prompts like “what sparked your interest in design?”
4. “What is one life goal you would love to help achieve?”
5. Putting together an idea board with visuals related to the concepts discussed above.
6. Write down all my design projects
7. Talk to someone out loud about my design projects
8. Presentation of what I wrote to someone (design projects).
All it took was a few steps, and I could see my path to success. There are thousands of ways to present your portfolio, but find what works best for you. This type of work will be always be going!
Believe accessibility is everything!
