As the world is changing in so many ways, housing prices are going up. People are changing jobs. People are losing jobs. People are taking care of family members. Kids are growing up too fast. Gas prices are higher…. So what happens when someone asks for help? They want something, you don’t hear from them ever, and they ask for your advice. I had to think about this because someone contact me after 9 months of nothing. They ask for advice about design. At first I was like “sure”, then the more I think about it, are they using me? I know that can be a negative thing to say.
Finally, I think about it more… I should look at whether they think of me as something they can trust. I know… I know you always anticipate something positive, then negative. This person wanted to get more information about wireframing. I shared a few blogs and what type of software would start. That was pretty much the end of it. The creative mind is constantly tasting both the sweet and sour taste buds to ensure they are prepared for everything that comes their way in life or in work!
Negative thoughts are worthwhile because if you notice them going through your head during a design crit, or ask a friend for advice — rather than getting frustrated with yourself. This is the most harmful thing you can do, to get frustrated with yourself. I realize this so often when someone starts something new, or even when a child tries to learn a sport. We get so upset, so quickly, and sometimes in flash.
This might be the same way when someone asks for our help, and do we call them our “friend”? I know you know a few people like that. No matter what that might be, just be yourself, and when someone asks for help, just do what you can. Life is too short not to help others. If you get frustrated, try these tips.
- Walk away
- Listening to music (Hawaiian Music — My favorite)
- Talk to a good friend
- Record yourself and delete it afterwards
- Draw or write down how you feel
- Bake something yummy
Take a break, focus on what you want to do. Remember, if someone needs help or asks, give them your time. 30 minutes can go a long way.
Believe accessibility is everything!
