Advice From the Creatives

I’ve been talking to various people in the last few months. Zoom calls, leave voice messages, catch them on LinkedIn.

Doing a fist bump with right and left hand

I have to say it was amusing to hear what was the best advice they have given them. I asked a few people and they answered, and some even told me they are still struggling to think about it. Sometimes you get bad advice? What I have learned is how to “filter” the advice, right. So what does work for you? Sometimes the advice makes sense later on, and my light bulb just comes on. So I hope these few Tit-bits are helpful.

This advice is sound and comes from a person who has been in the corporate industry a lot, and she has been around designers and developers.

“Building relationships is the currency of the workplace. If you can build authentic relationships with your team, stakeholders and partners, you can go far in achieving your goals.”

We have another UX Designer who has various roles in the creative field. He gave various advice, and some of them are reliable.

“You are not your work, you are not your employer, you are not your job title.”

“Your self worth has nothing to do with these.”

“Empathy towards users is important, but so is empathy towards your fellow designers and co-workers. Don’t lose sight of that”

“UX design is a small piece of the pie that business leaders have to think about when making decisions, so always try to focus your efforts on presenting clear, measurable business value that speaks to how your stakeholders think.”

“Every job environment is different, and how UX is practiced and perceived will be different at each place, especially depending on the level of UX maturity of the company. Therefore, rather than get upset about the lack of processes in place or how/why your team isn’t following the ideal process, focus on what the end outcome & deliverable are, and revise your process to work within this time frame. This might mean you don’t have adequate time to do research or ideation, etc., like you would want, but do your best for the time being, and try to negotiate for more time in future designs.”

No matter where you go, you always get advice from people who are your friends or family. If you are giving a negative person, you should be considerate. Remember my last thought, a powerful skill is filtering. While I went down one of my rabbit holes, I found this wonderful quote.

If Someone Hurts Your Feelings, Tell Them to Hurt Their Own Feelings if They Want to Hurt Someone’s Feelings.

Believe accessibility is everything!
